"In 1919, the First Transcontinental Motor Convoy, in which a U.S. Army convoy of motorized vehicles crossed the United State, departed Washington, D.C. (The trip ended in San Francisco on Sept. 6, 1919.)"

Entomologists went First

Cornell and Harvard University entomologists accomplished the same feat two years earlier, and they collected insects the entire way. See our History section for a brief explanation, or read all about it in J. Chester Bradley's account of the trip.
